Willie Claude Houston, 80, a longtime resident of Dothan, died on June 21, 2022, at his lake home in Holiday Shores. Willie was born on October 11, 1941, in Seminole County, Georgia, to the late Claude Cayce Houston and Hazel (Joyner) Houston.
Funeral services will be held at Ward Wilson Funeral Home on Friday, June 24, 2022, at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
He was married to his wife of 40 years, Sharon E. Houston and lived a full life surrounded by his extended family and all his special lake friends.
He is survived by his wife Sharon, daughter Darlene Houston Phillips (Jeff), sons Bill Deloney and Cameron Deloney (Kendall), and 8 grandsons: Garrit, Mason, Logan, Peyton, Austin, Braxton, Carson, and Dawson.
Willie is remembered as a loving husband and father, a hardworking and determined man who was “set in his ways”. He was always willing to tell anyone around him the best way to accomplish just about anything. His love for fishing will never be forgotten. “Popa” spent many hours on Lake Eufaula teaching his children and grandchildren how to fill the boat with dinner. He also thoroughly enjoyed eating at the Waffle House in Dothan, Grady’s Seafood in Graceville, and Nate’s in Slocomb.
Willie graduated from Miller County High School (GA) and worked his way through college as a barber until he received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from The University of Georgia (Athens, GA) in 1965. He worked in accounting with the City of Dothan for 30 years where he served as City Finance Director until he retired in 1999. Throughout these years, his co-workers delighted in his spreading of “Willie Wisdom” as he managed the city’s finances as if the money were his very own! He became a Master Mason in the Pythagoras Lodge # 659 in 1967 and continued his lifetime membership when this lodge merged with Dothan Lodge #466.
