Willie Jay Stewart, a resident of Ashford, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 21, 2017. He was 72.


A celebration of life service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, January 28, 2017 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in St. Paul A.M.E. Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 5-7 pm.


Willie was born on May 2, 1944 in Houston County and lived the early years of his in Ashford. He was employed with Farley Nuclear Plant, Lindy Homes in the construction industry and later with Red Fox Fertilizer for over 20 years. Willie was employed with Human Resources cutting firewood for the elderly until his retirement in the late 1990's. Willie sang with the 100 B.C.'s singing group where he played the bass guitar for several years. Willie was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church and was a Mason. He was preceded in death by his wife, Willie Faye Stewart, and his brother, Louis Stewart.


He leaves to cherish his memories his 6 sons, Robert Stewart, Frank Stewart, James Stewart, David Stewart, Willie Stewart, Jr., and Mark Burnett; his daughter, Janice Chambers; his 11 grandchildren, Mario Jackson, Robert Stewart Jr., Chelsea Stewart, Cieria Melton, Ashlen Stewart, Marquise Melton, Courtney Felix, Nyeshia Stewart, Jadavia Stewart, Nykjuan Stewart, and Brayden Stewart; 11 great-grandchildren, Jeremiah Henderson, Malik Jackson, Malachi Stewart, Marquise Melton Jr., Hayden Melton, Courtlyn Davis, Tristan Stewart, Maryann Newton, Jayvionna Newton, London Williams, and Surinedy Vanschuyver; brothers and sisters, W.D. Stewart, David Stewart, Edward Stewart, Robert Stewart, Willie Stewart, Willie Mae Davis, Lena Stewart, and Essie Pearl Doss; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
