Mason Dollar, 73, of Auburn, passed away Friday at UAB Medical Center. Mason was born and reared in Valley, Alabama, being the older of two boys. As a teenager, he was an Eagle Scout and a member of the 1959 Valley High School State Championship football team.
After graduating from Valley High School in 1960, Mason attended Samford University where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), a national leadership honor society, and Tri-Beta, national biology honor society. After finishing his Bachelor’s degree at Samford in 1964, he completed a Master of Science degree in Wildlife Conservation and Management at Auburn University before enlisting in the U.S. Army.
Mason was a Certified Wildlife Biologist and worked for more than 35 years for the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCA). He completed a Juris Doctorate from Jones Law School in 1981 and was admitted to the Alabama Bar Association that same year.
After retiring from the NRCA in 2006, Mason turned his long time hobby of rural land development into a second career as an agent with Southeastern Land Group. Always a steward of the land, Mason enjoyed volunteer work to provide wheelchair accessible hunting opportunities for the disabled through outdoorfriendsforever.org.
Mason was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and SEC football; but he was a family man above all. He was a member of the Babe McGhee/Fred Lacey Sunday School class at Auburn United Methodist Church where he served as an usher and volunteered with the AUMC Christmas Project. Mason was also an active parent volunteer for many years, coaching teams through the Auburn Recreation Department and supporting Auburn High School baseball.
Mason is survived by his wife of 46 years, Angela Lord Dollar, three children, Dawnn Dollar (Toby Canipe) of Estero, Florida, Kristie Cambridge of Auburn, and Dusty (Michelle) Dollar of Monticello, Florida; six grandchildren, Katlin-Madison Cambridge, Kacie Cambridge, Jackson Cambridge, Anna Kate Dollar, Allie Dollar, and Adalyn Dollar; one brother, Dr. Tony (Linda) Dollar of Dothan; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mason was preceded in death by his loving parents, Winford and Lucille Dollar.
A memorial service honoring Mason’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Auburn United Methodist Church with Dr. George Mathison officiating. The family will receive visitors beginning at 12 noon.
