Winfred Ferring McSween, affectionately known as "Mac" to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2024, in Birmingham, AL. Born on December 27, 1929, in the heart of Alabama, Mac's early years were filled with the warmth of southern living and the values of community and kinship.
Mac's journey through life was marked by valor and dedication. A proud Navy veteran, he served his country with honor during the Korean War, a testament to his courageous spirit. After his military service, Mac attended Auburn University, where he not only received an education but also met the love of his life, Millie, with whom he would share a lifetime of cherished memories.
The couple's love blossomed into a family, and Mac is survived by their three sons: Michael McSween (Nancy), Patrick McSween (Bernadette), and Joseph McSween (Kim). Mac was a pillar of strength and kindness to his family, always providing guidance and support with a gentle hand. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Millie McSween, and his parents, who instilled in him the virtues of hard work and compassion.
Throughout his life, Mac's career and personal interests were intertwined with a deep sense of responsibility and community involvement. His work history is a reflection of his steadfast nature, and his commitment to his fellow veterans remained unwavering long after his service years had ended.
After moving to Dothan from Maryland upon retirement, Mac found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. He lived in New Jersey for a while, where he no doubt left an indelible mark on all who crossed his path. An avid fisherman and a lover of gardening, Mac could often be found outdoors, relishing the tranquility of nature and the satisfaction of a day spent nurturing the earth.
Those who knew Mac would describe him as a man of courage and kindness. His warm presence and generous spirit were a comfort to many, and his legacy will be carried on through the lives he touched. Mac's love for his family, his country, and his community was evident in every aspect of his life, and his memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
