Zane "George" Thompson, 90, of Midland City passed away Sunday, December 16, 2012 at a local hospital.
Celebration of life services will be 6 pm Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at Sylvan Grove United Methodist Church with Dr. Jerry Dooling officiating and Robert Byrd of Sunset Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the church from 4-6pm prior to the services. Flowers are being accepted or memorial donations may be made to the Sylvan Grove United Methodist Church, c/o Wyndle Enfinger, 3991 County Rd. 73, Midland City, AL, 36350.
Zane "George" Thompson was born May 25, 1922 in Dale County, AL to the late Frank and Lillian Thompson. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII and was a Link Training Instructor. He was co-owner and operator of Adams and Thompson Milling Co, then was a farmer and cattleman. He and his wife operated Thompson Polled Hereford Cattle Co. until his retirement. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner. He enjoyed good bluegrass music, playing the banjo, eating oysters, and having all his family around him. He was a member of Sylvan Grove United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Martha Nell Thompson; a great-granddaughter Katie Tidwell; 6 brothers and 2 sisters.
Survivors include a daughter, Olivia Baldwin of Midland City; sons and daughters-in-law, Wesley and June Thompson of Midland City, and Paul and Becky Thompson of Wilmington, DE; 6 grandchildren, Angie Barefield, Matt Barefield (Lori), Julie Shaver (Woodie), Gina Adams, Jill Bruhn, all of Midland City, Jana Gindhart (Joey), Kaley Thompson, both of Wilmington, DE; 8 great-grandchildren, Stephen, Judson, Cole, Hayden, Ella Brooke, Allie Claire, Joshua, and John Wesley; sisters, Jenny Linderman and Carolyn Bowden; a brother Franklin Thompson; sisters-in-law, Gladys Adams Howell (Crawford), and Effie Thompson; numerous nieces and nephews; and a very special caregiver Ruby Malone.
Honorary pallbearers will be Matt Barefield, Mike West, Rusty Thompson, Roland Thompson, Woodie Shaver, and Stephen Elliott.
