OZARK…Mr. Jerry Wayne Barentine, a resident of Ozark, died early Monday evening, August 10, 2026, at his home. He was 73.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home in Ozark. Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Barentine, son of the late Ewell W. Barentine and Elizabeth W. Willis Barentine, was born and raised in Ozark, Alabama, and remained proud of his hometown throughout his life. He attended Ozark City Schools and built many lifelong friendships and memories during his years there. Those who knew him best knew he had a gentle spirit, a kind heart, and a quiet strength that made him someone people naturally felt comfortable around.
A devoted sports fan, Mr. Barentine rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on his beloved Atlanta Braves or support the Alabama Crimson Tide. Whether watching a game at home, talking sports with friends and family, or celebrating a big win, those teams brought him a great deal of joy over the years. He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life and found happiness in spending time with the people he loved.
Mr. Barentine was employed with Road Mart for many years, where he worked hard and earned the respect of those who knew him. He believed in the value of honest work and took pride in doing his job well. His strong work ethic and dependable nature were qualities that followed him throughout his life.
In the 1990s, he moved to Tennessee and made a life there, creating new friendships and experiences along the way. In 2018, he returned to Ozark to live with his daughter, allowing them to spend precious years together and create many cherished memories. Being near family meant a great deal to him, and he treasured the time he was able to share with those he loved most.
Above all else, Mr. Barentine will be remembered as a loving father and family man. To his daughter, he was the sweetest and most gentle giant God could have chosen for a father. He possessed a tender heart, a patient spirit, and an unconditional love that could always be counted on. His presence brought comfort, his advice brought reassurance, and his love provided strength through life’s challenges. He had a way of making people feel cared for without needing many words, simply through his kindness, compassion, and steady support.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jimmy, James, and Buddy; nephew, Johnny Barentine.
Surviving relatives include his daughter, Christy Lane (David), Ozark; grandchildren, George David Lane, III and Brittany Elrod (Gabe); great-granddaughter, Adalyn Kate (Elrod); sister, Betty Oglesby, St. Louis, Missouri; his beloved dog, Bella; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
