Peggy Caylor of Cullman, Alabama, originally DeFuniak Springs, Florida passed away at the age of 95 on January 24th, 2026, at her home surrounded by family. Born on February 9th, 1930, in Dothan Alabama, to the late Wyatt Armstead and Gladys Vickers Armstrong. She grew up in Union Springs, Alabama. After high school she attended Huntingdon College before attending Auburn University. She was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority at Auburn University, where she earned a degree in Early Childhood Education.
At 20 years old Peggy married her childhood sweetheart D. Arnold (Bully) Caylor, whom if you asked her, was all she ever wanted in life. Wed in August of 1950, Peggy went on to be the proud mother of four children which she “thanked the dear Lord” for daily. Having settled in DeFuniak Springs, Florida, Peggy split her time between the family’s business Kings Rexall Drug Store, and spending time at their homes in DeFuniak Springs and Seagrove Beach. Peggy cherished hosting friends and family at her home in DeFuniak and enjoyed playing bridge with her club, which gathered for many years. An avid dancer, Peggy never missed an opportunity to grab her husband, or really anyone close by, and dance the night away. The song Stardust, made famous by Nat King Cole and Benny Goodman, was especially dear to Peggy and Bully as this was “our song”. Known to dance within their embrace, music was a large part of the joy that emanated within their home and hearts.
Actively involved with the First Baptist Church, Peggy often participated in Sunday School, Girls in Action, Circle Club, Bridge Days, and other social functions that enriched her community. Cooking was a passion that she held dear, a gift that she enjoyed sharing in times of joy or sorrow. She especially treasured the time spent caring for her family, and being her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
She welcomed even the most unexpected guest with warmth, a beautifully set table, and a delicious meal. Whether preparing a simple family lunch or hosting a gathering of dear friends, Peggy took joy in providing comfort through the countless meals she lovingly prepared with care and thoughtfulness.
A lover of any great mystery book or television, Peggy always seemed to lead the pack when it came to figuring out the whodunit of a series. Our family will remember the countless hours of playing the umpteenth hand of cards while simultaneously playing detective to the story or program running in the background. A gracious winner, Peggy always reassured her subjects that the true purpose of a game of cards is to spend time and create joy and laughter together. We will always remember her pleading for “just one more hand” until, due to the late hour, one could no longer relent. After the final hand of the night a soft spoken “I love you darlin’” followed with a kiss was customary. What Peggy loved more than most things was ensuring her family was taken care of and encouraged to follow their dreams.
She is preceded in death by her husband D. Arnold Caylor, her parents, her daughter Leigh Love (Henning Jr.), her granddaughters Maryiah Spilling and Seasun Carter, and her great grandson Henning Spilling IV.
She is survived by her children: Arnold (Faye) Caylor, Karen (Chris) Woods, and Hines Caylor; her grandchildren: Christopher Woods, Caylor (Wilkinson) Woods, and Beth Vickers; her great-grandchild: Camron Spilling; three beloved great-great-grandchildren; cousins, nieces and nephews. Special extended family: Lucy (Barry) Simon and Dana (John) Fairchild.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Linda McClendon for the loving care she gave Mother and for being a cherished part of our family for over 10 years. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to Savannah and Lindy of CRMC Hospice for the compassionate care they provided.
The funeral will be held on February 7, 2026, at Holman Abbeville Mortuary, 434 Ozark Road, Abbeville, AL. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM and the funeral service following at 11:00AM. Interment will follow immediately at Mount Zion Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery Henry County Highway 31
