Rhonda Evon Newman, known lovingly to family and friends as Rhonda, passed away on September 19, 2026, in Dothan, Alabama, at the age of 72.

Rhonda was born on March 30, 1954, in Columbus, Georgia, where she spent her early years and graduated from Jordan Vocational High School. She carried the values of her upbringing throughout her life, meeting each season with warmth, quiet strength, and a deep devotion to the people she loved.

Rhonda lived a life centered on family and home. She was a devoted homemaker who lovingly cared for her family while her husband served in the United States Air Force. Her life reflected steadfast commitment, patience, and grace, and she took great pride in creating a nurturing home for those around her. She especially treasured her role as wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and her family was the heart of everything she did.

It was during her husband’s military service that Rhonda met Jerry Newman, the love of her life. Their love story was one of devotion and enduring companionship, and they were later married. Together they shared 53 wonderful years of marriage filled with love, loyalty, and countless memories. Their partnership stood as a testament to commitment and shared purpose, and Rhonda remained a faithful and loving wife throughout their years together.

Rhonda was preceded in death by her parents, James and Nell Russell, and by her brother, Roger Sellers her brother-in-law, Andrew Countryman. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Newman; her children, Jimmy Newman (Angela), and Jenni Levey (Tim); her sisters, Charlotte Countryman, Kathy Larson (Bill), and Jan Whaley (Sammy); her sister-in-law, Linda Sellers; her four grandchildren; her two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. She also leaves behind many others whose lives were touched by her kindness, encouragement, and steady presence.

Rhonda enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and found joy in spending time with her family and friends. She liked to play bingo, and she appreciated the fellowship and enjoyment that came with it. In all that she did, she brought a gentle spirit and a caring heart, and she will be remembered for the love she gave so freely and the comfort she brought to those around her.

Those who knew Rhonda will remember her as a woman of unwavering love, quiet resilience, and deep family devotion. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she shaped through her kindness, her faithfulness, and her example of what it means to love well. Though she will be deeply missed, her memory will remain a blessing to all who were fortunate enough to know her.

A celebration of Rhonda’s life will be held at 2:00 pm Friday September 25, 2026 at Sunset Funeral Home.
