
Sharon Mitchum, a beloved member of the Geneva community, passed away on April 28, leaving behind a legacy of service, passion and deep devotion to the people and place she loved. A woman of many talents, Sharon spent her professional life shaping young minds and hearts. She taught speech, theater and physical education at Geneva High School and proudly served for many years as the girls’ varsity coach of several sports inspiring student athletes. Sharon’s love for music and faith was a cornerstone of her life. For over 50 years, she served faithfully as the pianist and organist at First Baptist Church, a role that brought joy to her and to all who heard her play.
As the mother of six, her leadership extended beyond the home, classroom, and sanctuary. She was a proud member of the Geneva City School board for many years and founder of Fun Land daycare, where her care and commitment reached even the youngest members of the community. Sharon’s adventurous spirit led her to become a licensed pilot, and her love for community was reflected in her active involvement with the Athenaeum Club. A devoted and lifelong supporter of the University of Alabama, Sharon’s heart beat for the Crimson Tide. Whether through her work with the Geneva County chapter or the National Alumni Association, she cheered with pride, loyalty, and joy. She also cherished her sisterhood in Phi Mu.
Sharon loved life at the beach, often hosting gatherings of family and friends where laughter and good food were always in abundance. Her garden and beautifully kept yard were a source of joy and pride, reflecting her love of nature and her eye for beauty.
Above all, Sharon will be remembered for her warm heart, generous spirit, and unwavering dedication to her family, faith, and community. She leaves behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Sharon was born in Mobile, AL to the late Rev. Bain A. and Ella Pauline Annette Lambert. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. O.D. “Buddy” Mitchum; one daughter, Elizabeth “Liz” Mitchum; one grandson, Tyler Lee Mitchum; two sisters, Beverly Williams and Delores Roberts.
She is survived by five children, Lisa Wood McGowan (Gary) of Dothan, AL, Todd Wood (Selina) of Albertville, AL; Mark “Hunk” Mitchum of Panama City, FL, Bain Mitchum (Renee Harpole) of La Grange, GA, and Dr. Dale Mitchum (Cyndi) of Geneva, AL; eight grandchildren, Wood McGowan (Kelsey Patterson), Seth McGowan (Ashton), Maggie Thompson (Clayton), Olivia Wood, Natalie Mitchum, Conner Mitchum, Cameron Mitchum, and Trent Mitchum; two great grandchildren, Monroe McGowan, and Tyler Thompson; and other special family members; one sister, Margot Ashbury (David) of Fairhope, AL.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at First Baptist Church of Geneva with the Reverend Dr. Edwin Scott and Rev. Steve Skidmore officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva, AL directing. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Serving as pallbearers will be Steve Williams, Donald Williams, Rob Moyer, Michael Moyer, John Roberts, Conner Mitchum, Trent Mitchum, Wood McGowan, and Seth McGowan.
