It was a grueling test of skill and determination due to the possibility of
severe weather that was threatening to move into the Gulf Shores area. The
complex director restructured the brackets to squeeze the entire regional
tournament in under 24 hours.
On Friday The Lady Raiders played over twelve straight hours of softball with
only short breaks in between while they waited for games to finish so they could
take the field to begin their next contest. HA may have breezed through their
first contest at 2:30pm but it was not indicative of the rigorous challenge that
lay ahead of them. The Raiders finished their scheduled Friday play 3:00am
Saturday morning only to return to the softball diamond just 3 short hours later
to prepare for their 7am start time against The Lady Tigers from Elba.
On Saturday The Houston Academy Lady Raiders played 4 games in a row on the same
field with their only break being 15 to 20 minutes while the crew drug, watered
and relined the field for the first time since the Raiders began play on it at
7am that morning. The Lady Raiders battled it out for over 8 consecutive
hours on the softball field their second day of play to earn an opportunity to
compete at the 2A Fastpitch State Tournament this weekend in Montgomery,
Alabama.
"We could not be more proud of the girls! They have given 110% all weekend
under some pretty strenuous conditions. They played with a ton of heart!" Coach
Sharon Cherry
