Stephen Russell Culp, known affectionately as Steve to his family and friends, was a source of fun and intelligence in the lives of those who knew him. Born on March 27, 1973, in Kenton, Ohio, Steve was a lifelong learner and a gifted communicator who brought laughter and wisdom wherever he went. His journey on this earth came to a close on October 24, 2025, in Dothan, Alabama.
Steve’s early years were spent in the nurturing arms of his parents, Russell and Edwina Brunson Culp. His childhood in Dothan was filled with the love of a close-knit family, which grew to include his sisters, Amanda Culp (Chris) Kowalewski and Sarah Culp (Brandon) Faircloth. Steve was the fun-loving and adored uncle to his nieces and nephews, Charlotte and Savannah Faircloth and Everett and Graham Kowalewski. His family circle extended to his cherished aunts and uncles, Rebecca Creel, Linda Pouncey, Edward (Judy) Culp, and Linda Kerns, as well as several cousins who shared in the Culp family’s warmth and camaraderie.
An exemplary student, Stephen excelled academically as Salutatorian of his graduating class at Headland High School in 1991. His thirst for knowledge led him to Troy University, where he became a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and earned a degree in Small Business Entrepreneurship. Steve’s entrepreneurial spirit found a home at Big Canoe Resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where he excelled in real estate sales, helping others find their dream vacation homes.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Steve was a man of many passions. He was an Eagle Scout in his youth. His interests included a love for castles in Ohio and around the world. Steve had a deep knowledge and appreciation for the value and preservation of antiques, which he likely inherited from his maternal grandfather, Guy Brunson.
Steve’s personality was a combination of humor, intelligence, and kindness. His wit and intelligence made him stand out in any gathering, and his kind, thoughtful nature made him a cherished friend and family member. Always one to support others on their journeys, Steve was an active participant in Celebrate Recovery at Harvest Church, sharing his strength and hope with those around him.
Stephen’s gentle heart was reflected in his bond with his adored nieces and nephews, as well as his beloved Weimaraner, Stonewall. Their companionship was a testament to Steve’s capacity for unconditional love and the simple joys of life.
As we prepare to celebrate Steve’s life, we reflect on a man who was not only funny, intelligent, and kind, but who had also put his trust in the Lord and will be an unforgettable presence in our lives. A celebration of Steve’s life will be held at 11 am on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at Sunset Funeral Home, where family and friends will gather to share memories and honor his life. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 10-11 am before the service.
Stephens’s legacy will live on in the laughter of his nieces and nephews, the wisdom he imparted, and the countless memories etched in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. His was a life that exemplified intelligence and a profound kindness that will continue to shine through all who knew him.
