
Joseph Alain François Coutu of Geneva, Alabama, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026. He was 62 years old.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, July 20, 2026, in the chapel of Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 5:00 p.m.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Meadowlawn Cemetery in Enterprise, Alabama, with Father Zachary Greenwell officiating and Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva directing.
Flowers are gratefully accepted; however, memorial donations in Alain’s memory are encouraged to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) at pancan.org, the American Cancer Society, or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Alain was born on August 12, 1963, in Montréal, Québec, Canada, to the late Paul-Eugène Coutu and Marie Carmen Labranche Coutu.
Alain was a devoted husband, brother, Godfather, uncle, and faithful friend. He was known for his warm personality, generous spirit, and willingness to help anyone in need. He never met a stranger and genuinely enjoyed spending time with others. He was also the loving guardian of his beloved little Moondoggie, who held a special place in his heart.
A lifelong learner, Alain attended the Collège Militaire Royal (CMR) in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Québec, Canada, from 1980 until 1985. He later earned a Master of Science in Computer and Information Science from Florida State University in 2003.
Alain proudly served his country in the Canadian Forces Air Force Branch for 26 years, from 1980 until his retirement in 2006. As a Communications Electronics Engineer (CELE), he held several distinguished postings throughout his military career, including the NORAD System Support Facility at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida; the Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment (AETE) at CFB Cold Lake, Alberta; and the North American Air Defense Modernization Program at National Defense Headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario.
Following his military service, Alain continued to build an impressive career in software development and management. From September 2006 until July 2017, he held various leadership and technical positions with Nortel Networks, Avaya, and Truck Right Data Management in Belleville, Ontario. In 2017, he joined Synergem Technologies, Inc. of Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, where he faithfully served as Director of Software Development until his passing.
Alain was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Belleville, Ontario, and was actively involved with the Knights of Columbus in Trenton, Ontario. His faith and commitment to service were evident throughout his life.
An avid sports enthusiast, Alain enjoyed participating in and supporting a wide variety of athletic activities. Whether playing intramural hockey at CFB Cold Lake, helping lead volleyball and badminton teams at Tyndall Air Force Base, or enjoying a round of golf with friends, he embraced every opportunity for fellowship and competition. Of all his athletic pursuits, he was especially proud of his certification and years of dedicated service as a soccer referee.
Throughout his life, Alain received numerous honors and professional distinctions. Among them were the United States Air Force Commendation Medal, the Minuteman Award, and the Florida State University Software Directorate Good Design Award. He was a member of the Florida State University Garnet Key Honor Society, a certified SCRUM Master, a member of the Agile Alliance, and held a patent as well as several publications related to software design and development.
Survivors include his loving wife, Sheila Coutu; his sister, Sylvie Coutu; his brother-in-law, René Gagnon; his niece and Goddaughter, Jade Gagnon; his Godfather, Julien Coutu; his Godmother, Lorraine Coutu; and numerous extended family members and friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness, wisdom, and friendship.
