COWARTS:       At the request of Cowarts Mayor Randy Rowland and members of Cowarts Town Council, the Houston County Commission is set to approve SAMMY BAGWELL MEMORIAL BLVD.

Cowarts Mayor Randy Rowland asked D2 Houston County Commissioner Tracy Adams if the Houston County Road and Bridge could make the signs for the designation of SAMMY BAGWELL MEMORIAL BLVD. The designation will be placed on North Broad Street in honor and memory of the late Sammy Bagwell.

The name of the road will remain North Broad Street, but it will be featured in the memory of Sammy Bagwell.

Sammy Bagwell was a product of Cowarts, Alabama. He was a friend to everyone in the community and a regular at Broadway Cafe in Ashford most every morning. He always took time to talk to everyone, joke and play around with people, and was everyone’s friend. His death was sudden and unexpected on November 20, 2024. Everyone always spoke kind words about Sammy Bagwell.

After his death, and in a conversation between Cowarts Mayor Randy Rowland and D2 Houston County Commissioner Tracy Adams, the process was put into works. After the approval of the designation there will be a sign erected jointly by the family of Sammy Bagwell, D2 Houston County Commissioner Tracy Adams and the Houston County Commission, along with Cowarts Mayor Randy Rowland and members of the Cowarts Town Council.

Register for the Wiregrass Youth Symphony Orchestra: “Music enriches the soul”

If your child has ever expressed interest in learning music, the Wiregrass Youth Symphony Orchestra (WYSO) is a great place to start.

WYSO accepts youth with experience in music and total beginners alike.

“(Music) enriches the soul,” said Tricia Marotz, the Orchestra Director. “Music helps well-round a child, and it actually helps your brain function better.”

Making music involves more than the voice or fingers playing an instrument; a child learning about music has to tap into multiple skill sets, often simultaneously.

WYSO offers lessons to complete beginners, and they have string instruments available for rent. Beginners will start with group lessons in the Wiregrass Strings.

Those who have been taking lessons for at least a year will play in the Philharmonia, and the more advanced students can audition to play with the Youth Symphony.

To audition, come prepared to play two scales and a prepared piece of the student’s choice. The student will also sight-read a piece provided at the audition.

Auditions and registration are at the Cultural Arts Center at 909 South Saint Andrews St. in Dothan on January 18th. Please refer to the flyer below.

The fee is $175 per student each semester. Ages 8-19 are welcome.
