Obituary from Holman Funeral Home of Ozark – Ozark, Alabama
Dwight Augustus Baker, age 93, of Ozark, Alabama, was born on April 16, 1932, in Ariton, Alabama, and on Monday, January 26, 2026, he peacefully entered his eternal home, surrounded by the love of his devoted wife and daughters.
Funeral services for Mr. Baker will be 1:00 P. M. Monday, February 2, 2026, from Midway Assembly of God Church with Reverend Michael Senn officiating. Interment will follow in Ariton Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends Monday in the church from 12:00 Noon until service time.
Dwight leaves behind a lifetime of love in his beloved wife of 70 years, Merle Grantham Baker, the joy of his heart and the love of his life. Together they shared a beautiful marriage built on faith, devotion, and unwavering commitment. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alf Baker and Katie Danner Baker; and his sister, Verlene Childree. He is also survived by his daughters, Syretha Carter (Wayne) and Sheryl Senn (Michael), who were the light of his life and the pride of his heart. He is survived by his siblings, Jerry Baker, Nell Childree, Sara Roberts, and Jimmy Baker, along with many dearly loved nieces and nephews. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Matthew Senn (Carole), Kala Carroll, Kyle Pauley, Micah Senn (Riley), and Anna Dixon (Josh), and a deeply cherished great-grandfather to Eleanor Senn, Halle Carroll, Sunny Carroll & MaKayla Dixon. His grandchildren were his greatest treasures, and his great-granddaughters were the delight of his soul—each one held close in his heart and prayers.
Mr. Baker honorably served his country as a United States Army veteran and carried that same sense of duty, integrity, and humility throughout his life. Following his military service, he dedicated many years to the automotive industry, serving as Body Shop Manager at Jerry Mitchell Chevrolet and later as a longtime manager at Walter Hand Ford in Ozark, Alabama. Dwight was a man of deep love and steadfast faith. He adored his wife and never missed an opportunity to care for and spoil her. His daughters were truly the apple of his eye, and his grandchildren were his prized possessions. Family was his greatest earthly blessing. An avid outdoorsman, Dwight loved deer and turkey hunting and won several shooting competitions, including awards for turkey size and beard length. He also found great peace and joy in tending his garden and caring for his chickens. Some of his most cherished moments were spent with his grandchildren and great-granddaughters by his side—helping collect fresh eggs, feeding the chickens, and teaching them the simple beauty of hard work, patience, and gratitude for God’s provision. Dwight loved sharing stories—of his Army days, of hunting and fishing adventures, and of lessons learned through a life well lived—stories that will continue to be told for generations. Above all, Dwight was a faithful Christian man who loved the Lord with his whole heart. He served his church for many years as Sunday School Superintendent and as a board member in the Assembly of God denomination, leading with wisdom, humility, and quiet strength. His life reflected his faith, and he leaves behind a Godly example and a legacy of love, service, and faith that will live on through his family. While our hearts mourn his passing, we rejoice in knowing that Dwight has heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” and is now at peace in the presence of his Savior.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made in his memory to Midway Assembly of God Church, 37 Private Road 1539, Midland City, Alabama 36350.

OZARK…Mr. Walter Carl Fairley, Jr. (Sergeant First Class, United States Army, Retired), passed away, Friday, January 23, 2026, in Flowers Hospital. He was 80.
Homegoing services, with full military honors, will be held at 11:30 A.M. Monday, February 2, 2026, the Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Roosevelt Zanders, Jr. officiating. Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. (ET) Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, in Fort Mitchell, Alabama. Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:30 A.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Fairley, the son of the late Walter Carl Fairley, Sr. and Georgianna Bell Fairley, was born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia, where his strong sense of duty and determination first took root. After finishing high school, he chose a path of service and joined the United States Army. He went on to serve two tours in Vietnam, facing challenges most people can only imagine. His courage, loyalty, and commitment to his fellow soldiers were qualities that stayed with him throughout his life. He later retired from the Army after twenty dedicated years of service, carrying with him the pride of having served his country with honor. Upon his retirement, the following was written in his orders: “SFC Fairley is definitely one of the most knowledgeable and professional noncommissioned officers in his MOS in the United States Army. He has a vast working knowledge of all aspects of aviation maintenance and maintenance management. SFC Fairley has added that extra dimension of excellence to instruction at the Army Aviation Center through his thorough research and attention to detail in execution of all assigned tasks. The uniquely high standards of performance and professionalism to which he adheres clearly indicate that he is one of the finest noncommissioned officers the United States Army has produced.
After his military career, he continued working hard and building connections in his community through his job at PEMCO at Napier Field, where he remained until his retirement. He was known as someone who showed up, did his work with integrity, and treated people with respect. He was a hero beyond his family, having saved the life of a coworker who fell off a wing and would have died had he not caught him in midair.
Outside of work, Mr. Fairley found joy in the simple, peaceful moments of life. He loved spending time at Lake Tholocco at Fort Rucker, fishing in the quiet early mornings, smoking his cigar or relaxing by the water. It was one of the places where he felt most at ease. He was also a proud member of the N.R.A. and enjoyed visiting the shooting range in Daleville, where he could practice a skill, he valued and spend time doing something he genuinely enjoyed. He was very proud of the fact that his two children graduated from college. Having accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior as a teenager, faith was important in his life.
Mr. Fairley was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Moody and Beverly Fairley; a niece, Sharon Moody; and a nephew, Tony Moody. Though he has left this earthly life, the memories he created—his stories, his laughter, his resilience, and the love he shared—will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His life was one of service, strength, and sincerity, and he will be deeply missed.
Surviving relatives include his wife of fifty-eight years, Ada Throckmorton Fairley, Ozark; daughter, Cecilia Singletary (Chris), Newnan, Georgia; his son, Walter C. Fairley, III, Ozark.
