Obituary: Mr. Rayford Ray Barnes

 

Mr. Rayford Ray Barnes of Slocomb passed away Thursday, January 16, 2025 at his home surrounded by his loving family.  He was 89.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at Malvern Baptist Church with Rev. Hosea Parker officiating and Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time.

Mr. Barnes was born on March 1, 1935, to the late JD and Lonie Mae Givins Barnes. Rayford began his career in 1954 at the Twitchell Corporation advancing to a supervisor position. In the late 1960’s, he was employed with the Alabama Electric Motor Shop until his retirement in 2003. After retirement, his love for working on motors and desire to help family and friends always kept him busy and often filled in at various electric motor shops. Rayford also had a great passion for drag racing on the local Malvern streets in the 1950’s. In the 1960’s he began round track racing at Rocket Speedway and various other tracks with Tommy Roland, as driver of Car #6. He enjoyed being outdoors, cutting grass, working on rental houses, and anywhere he was needed in the community. Rayford was a man of faith, member of Malvern Baptist Church, and was active in the Men’s Adult Sunday School Class.  He was a very loving husband, adoring father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, a brother, Jay Lee Barnes; two sisters: Eldora Davis, and Merlene Barnes, all preceded him in death.

Survivors include his loving wife, Shelby Jean Barnes; son, Dennis Ray Barnes (Mary Catherine); grandchildren: Victoria Elaine Clemmons,  and Austin Tony Clemmons; sister in laws: Annette Barnes, Melba Campbell, and Sybil Stephens; brother in laws: Tommy Davis and Donald Freeman(Linda); nieces: Debra Sue Parrish, Tammy Brown(Keith), Darlene Houk, Bolivia Windham, Beth Stephens Branch, and Denise Galloway Rowland; nephews: Kevin Freeman, Rodney Galloway, Tommy Davis Jr., and Jeff Stephens; and other extended family and friends.

DOTHAN. . .Margrette Brackin Joiner, a resident of Dothan, died late Wednesday night, January 15, 2025, in a Dothan hospital. She was 95.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 18, 2025, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Bob Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory, between Headland & Dothan. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Saturday at the mortuary in Headland.
Mrs. Joiner was born and reared in the Blackwood Community, near Headland, daughter of the late Walton Cornelius Brackin and Wistee Kirkland Brackin. She lived most of her adult lifetime in Dothan. Mrs. Joiner was a member of Greystone United Methodist Church. She was formerly employed by the Federal Judiciary System as a Court Reporter in Dothan. Mrs. Joiner was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Durwood Joiner, a daughter, Jackie Harrison, a son, David Wayne Joiner, an infant, daughter, Margrette Emily Joiner, granddaughters, Suzanne Huff and Amanda Wells, grandson, David Lee Joiner and a sister, Imojean Brackin.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Jane Huff (Dennis), Dothan; and Emily Morris (Buddy), Pulaski, TN; grandchildren, Jennifer White (Harold), Laura Deal (Joey), Robyn Wilkes (Chuck), Tonia Jernigan (Jeff), Cody Joiner, Jakob Joiner, Stacie Gleason, Brett Gleason (Angie) and Robert Joiner; numerous great and great-great-grandchildren.

Dollie Lou (Reynolds) Granger, age 82, resident of Dothan passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at Wesley Place Rehabilitation in Dothan.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 am on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Memory Hill Cemetery with Rev. Billy Rich officiating and Glover Funeral Home directing.

Flowers will be accepted or Memorial Contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Dollie was born on November 12, 1942 in Dothan to Alfred Eugene Reynolds and Miriam Ruth Trammell. She graduated from Dothan High School in 1961. Dollie worked for Equifax for thirty years and later for PWC (Professional Wiregrass Communications) for twenty three years where she retired as an Operations Manager. She was a past member of the Dothan Pilot Club. She enjoyed watching sports, reading, and keeping her great grandson. Dollie attended Calvary Baptist Church.

Dollie is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth Granger; son, Lynn Granger; sister, Peggy Madison; infant brother; two nephews, Randy Madison and Brett Cannon; and brother in law, Bobby Granger.

Survivors include her granddaughter, Breanna Granger Bell (Jordan); great grandson, Brodie Bell, both of Dothan; sister, Sue Cannon of Pensacola, FL; daughter in law, Joy Granger of Dothan; sister in law, Patricia Granger of Dothan; several nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jordan Bell, Wesley Rowell, Troy Jones, Jayme Lemon, Blayde Price, Blake Cannon, Len Stinson, Justin Parrish, and Greg Bass.

EUFAULA… Terry Carlina Phillips, a resident of Eufaula, Alabama, passed away Thursday morning, January 16, 2025, at her home. She was 65.

No services are planned at this time.

Mrs. Phillips was born in Fort Pierce, Florida, to the late Samuel Douglas Fowler and Lillie Mae Stoner Fowler. She had previously lived in Georgia and Colorado, before moving to Eufaula, Alabama close to two years ago. She worked as a manager in retail. Terry was a member of the Ridgeway Community Church. She was a loving wife and mother.

Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Vicki White and her brother, Sam Fowler, Sr..

Leaving to cherish her memories is her husband, Joseph Q. Phiilips; her daughter, Jessica Fowler; her sister, Cindy Waits (Emory); her brother, Steve Fowler; her grandchildren, Asia Fowler, Cartez Ross, and Jameze Ross; and her great-grandchild, Carmelo Ross.

HEADLAND… Doris Ethridge Owens, a resident of the Tumbleton Community near Headland, Alabama, passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 14, 2025, at a Henry County Health & Rehabilitation. She was 92.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, January 17, 2025, at Wright Funeral Home & Crematory Chapel with Reverend Joey Pettis and Reverend Joel Laseter officiating. A eulogy will be given by her great-grandson, Dylan Owens. Burial will follow in the Balkum Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. prior to the service. Wright Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

Doris is a lifelong resident of the Tumbleton Community near Headland, Alabama. She attended the Newville Schools. She married the love of her life, Richard Carl Owens, on June 15, 1950, and was by his side until his death on January 5, 1982. She was an active member of Kinsey Baptist Church and loved singing in the Choir. She attended New Zion Free Will Baptist Church in her later years. She was a seamstress all of her life. She worked for Wex-Tex Manufacturing in Headland, Alabama for forty plus years and then Wex-Tex in Ashford, Alabama for five years. Doris was a very crafty person. She did cross-stitch, making a lot of tablecloths and blankets for family and friends. Loved putting puzzles together and making caramel cakes for special family gatherings. She loved her family and friends with all of heart. She was a caregiving person and helped a lot of people when they were sick or just needed a friend. She was known for her generous spirit and the love she showed everyone she met.

Being the last of her generation of her family siblings, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Carl Owens; her parents, Mattie Lou McArdle Ethridge and Charlie Alonza Ethridge; her brothers, Orlan Ethridge, James Ethridge, and Monroe Ethridge; her sisters, Willodine Stokes, Ava Reneau, Charlie Nell Rogers, Betty McNab, Nina Rabe, and Myra Scruggs; her many cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews; as well as her several best friends, all of whom she missed dearly.

Leaving to cherish her memories is her daughter, Deborah Owens Riley (Stan); her son, Chuck Owens (Karen); her sister-in-law, Annice Ethridge; her grandchildren, Matt Owens (Lynn) and Eric Owens (Lindsey); her great-grandchildren, Taylor Owens, Dylan Owens, Dustin Owens, Erica Owens, and Easton Owens; her great-great-grandson, Greyson Henderson; her very special niece who was like a sister to her, Sharlene Cox; her very special friends, Mary & Mickey DeShazo and Terry & Debbie Cobb; and her special cousin, Ray & Brenda Hollis.

Doris and her family wish to thank Dr. Meadows and the entire staff of Henry County Health & Rehabilitation for the loving care they provided during her stay. Many special friendships were formed with staff members and they know who they are. Also, the family would like to express their appreciation to Gentiva Hospice, Angie Jones, Pam Crossley, Laura Middlebrooks, and Reverend Joel Laseter for their loving care and kindness shown to our mother.

Mr. Johnny D. Graham of Samson, AL passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2025 at his home in Samson, AL. He was 63 years old.

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2025 at Trinity Chapel Church in Samson, AL with Rev. Jonathan Presley officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Johnny was born in Covington County, AL on May 04, 1961 to the late J.W. and Audrey Merle Hudson.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved spending time outdoors, watching old westerns, enjoying chocolate ice cream, porch sitting, hunting, fishing and being surrounded by the ones he loved. Johnny will be missed by those who knew him best and loved him most.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Mock Graham.

Johnny is survived by his children, Kenny Weeks (Jessica), Kandice Stanley (Nick) and Tina Turner; grandchildren, Sadie (Leighton), Kenny (Sydni), Cody (Shiane), Tripp (Mary), Gracie, Blade, Molly Kate, Mary Beth, John David, Bryson and Mason; great-grandchildren, Ryler, Rhett, Teagan, Caroline, Eloise, Tatum, Remi, Lakelyn and Truett; three brothers; Donnie Hudson (Dawn), Dwight Hudson (Robin) and Perry Hudson (Sandy) and a number of special nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
