Mary Evelyn Adkison passed away on May 1, 2026, in Ashford, Alabama, at the age of 92.
Evelyn was born on June 17, 1933, in Ashford, Alabama, to Ben and Nolie Lominack. She lived a long and meaningful life marked by faith, devotion to family, and a warm spirit that touched everyone who knew her. She was a Christian and a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church, where her life reflected the values she held dear. Evelyn was loving, faith-filled, and friendly, and she carried those qualities with her throughout her years.
Evelyn was a proud and devoted Auburn fan and never missed a Saturday game. She had a green thumb and especially loved growing daylilies, finding joy in caring for her plants and watching them bloom. She also enjoyed spending time at Terrace at Grove Park, where she resided and loved to play bingo. Those who knew her remembered her as sassy in the best sense of the word, someone who never met a stranger and always had kind words for everyone. Her outgoing personality made her a joy to be around, and her kindness left a lasting impression on many lives.
Evelyn devoted more than 50 years of her life to her work at J.C. Penney, where she was a familiar and trusted presence until her retirement in 1995. After retiring, she continued to share her gracious spirit through her work at Kennington’s Dress Shop and later at Ward Wilson Funeral Home, where she served as a greeter. In every place she worked, Evelyn was known for her friendliness, her steady presence, and the genuine care she showed to others.
She is survived by her son, Gary Bruce; her daughter, Renay Bruce Reynolds and her husband Steve; her daughter-in-law, Cathy Bruce; her step-son, Travis Adkison and his wife Peggy; her grandchildren, Megan Knight, Heather Brooks and her husband Joe, Jonathan Reynolds and his wife Ashlea, and Katie McNeil and her husband Chris; her great-grandchildren, Anna Claire Brooks, J Cole Brooks, Taylor Mobley and her husband Jerrod, Alea Reynolds, Jonathan Reynolds, Charleigh McNeil, and Barrett McNeil; and her great-great-grandchild, Christian Mobley. Evelyn also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will cherish her memory.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hollan Bill Adkison, whose military service brought great joy to her; by her step-son, Thomas Adkison; by her parents, Ben and Nolie Lominack; her sister, Bennie Merle Jackson; her brothers, Buddy Lominack and Edward Lominack; and by her beloved grandson, Jeremy Bruce. Evelyn’s family takes comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with those she loved and missed so deeply.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tim Willis officiating. Evelyn will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband at Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation to the staff at Grove Park and to Gentiva Hospice for the love and support they provided during Evelyn’s final two weeks. Their kindness brought comfort during a tender time, and it will always be remembered with gratitude.
Evelyn Adkison will be remembered for her steadfast faith, her loving heart, and the way she made others feel welcome and valued. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the friendships she formed, and the many lives she brightened with her presence.
