John Marvin Young, Jr.

John Marvin Young, Jr.

John Marvin Young, Jr. entered his eternal home on October 12, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Though a longtime resident of Union Point, Georgia, John spent his later years in Dothan, Alabama, and most recently in Cleveland, Tennessee, where he enjoyed life with his wife, daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren.

Born on October 1, 1942, in Atlanta, Georgia, John was a proud graduate of Union Point High School. He dedicated 43 years of service to Georgia Power Company, stepping away only briefly to serve his country as a private in the United States Army.

John’s greatest joy was found in the simple beauty of the land. Farming was not just his pastime—it was his passion. He loved mowing his fields on his Massey Ferguson tractor, tending to his herd of beef cattle, and planting a large garden each year. Together with his devoted wife, Carol, he spent countless hours canning and freezing vegetables from their garden and making delicious pear preserves from the trees in their backyard. Sharing those preserves with family and friends became one of his favorite traditions.

Faith was an important part of John’s life. In his early years, he was a member of Woodville Baptist Church in Woodville, Georgia. After moving to Dothan in 2012, he became a cherished member of Cornerstone Church. Upon relocating to Cleveland, Tennessee, he attended Church Alive until his health no longer allowed.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John Marvin Young, Sr., and Agnes Underwood Young. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Carol Wray Young; his daughter, Wendy Young Chandler (Jack); grandchildren Andrew Chandler (Megan), Caleb Chandler, Isaac “Kenan” Chandler, and John “Landon” Chandler; great-grandchildren Sebastian and Harper; sister Ann Yearwood (Hollis); niece Tracye Watson (Bob); nephew Tim Harrison (Minan); as well as numerous extended family members and dear friends. John also leaves behind his faithful companion, his dog Luke, who rarely left his side through sickness and health.

The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to Gentiva Hospice for their compassionate care over the past year, and a special thank-you to Nancy Turnham, DNP, for her dedication, kindness, and the exceptional care she provided to John and his family.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2025, in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, in Midland City, Alabama, with Pastor Bobby Marks officiating. Following the service, family and friends are invited to join the family for a meal and fellowship in the Funeral Home’s Reception Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Cornerstone Church, P.O. Box 8641, Dothan, AL 36304, or Church Alive, P.O. Box 4255, Cleveland, TN 37320.

Arrangements are being handled by Sunset Memorial Park, Funeral Home, and Crematory in Midland City, Alabama. To leave a message for the family, please visit John’s online obituary at www.sunsetmemorialpark.com.
