Frances Littlefield

Frances Elizabeth Littlefield, age 86 of Ariton passed away June 14, 2025, at her residence.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 19th at Memory Gardens (6200 Hwy. 431 N., Headland, AL). The family will receive friends at the cemetery 30 minutes prior to the service. Pastor Daryl Bates will officiate. Serving as pallbearers will be Josh Freeman, Griffin Littlefield, Curtis Dawkins, and Brady Brown.
Left to cherish her beautiful memory, daughters, Lenita King of Ariton, AL; Amy Dawkins (Curtis) of Ariton, AL; sons, Scott Littlefield (Christy) of Athens, AL; Clay Littlefield of Taylorsville, NC; brother, Gerald Higdon (Carolyn) of Huntsville, AL; grandchildren, Lacy Littlefield, Lauren Littlefield, Lindsey Littlefield, Courtney Linam, Brady Brown, Brittany Willis, Miranda Kegg, Alaina Freeman, Griffin Littlefield, and Katie Okey; numerous great grandchildren.
She was a member of the Church of Christ. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and was a wonderful cook. She was an avid Alabama football fan, she loved playing cards, dancing, singing, reading and she was an excellent storyteller. She will be dearly missed.

Opal Shipes Newsome

EUFAULA. . .Opal Shipes Newsome, a resident of Eufaula, Alabama, died Sunday morning, June 15 2025, in the Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Facility. She was 99.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:30 until 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, June 18, 2025 at Kent Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Panama City, Florida. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary &  Cremations is in charge of local arrangements.

Mrs. Newsome was born and reared in Jackson County, Florida, daughter of the late John Henry Shipes and Mattie Barrentine Shipes She lived in Panama City all her adult lifetime. Mrs. Newsome was a member of First Baptist Church of Eufaula and a former member of Eastside Assembly of God in Panama City. She worked as a seamstress most of her adult lifetime. Mrs. Newsome was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton R. Newsome, Sr., and two sisters, Ruby Sims and Bonnie Smith.

Surviving relatives include a daughter, Donna Burch (Charles), Eufaula; a son, Clayton R. Newsome, Jr. (Eloise), Panama City, FL; grandchildren, Michelle Holley (Paul), Angela Hawkins (Mike), and Alicia Claggett (Andrew); six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Anthony Roy Knighton ( Tony )

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Anthony Ray Knighton (Tony), who departed this world on Friday June 13, 2025.

Tony was 72 years old and cherished dearly byfamily, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with them.

Born on March 7,1953, Tony was a beacon of kindness and compassion. His life wascharacterized by generosity, laughter, and a tireless dedication to the betterment of others.

Throughout his journey, Tony touched countless lives, leaving behind memories and lessons tobe treasured for generations.Tony was raised in Hilton, Georgia and graduated from Houston County High School in 1971.

After graduation, Tony went to work for Daniels Construction Company. While at Daniels Tonyworked on the construction of the Farley Nuclear Plant. Tony worked at the Farley Nuclear Plant for over 40 years, beginning as a contractor, then hiring on with the Power Company he progressed through positions of support and leadership within Alabama Power and SouthernNuclear. Most of his time at Plant Farley was in Maintenance, Waste and Decon and Facilities.

Tony loved spending time on his Ranch, caring for the cattle, horses, goats, and Buffalo. He wasan avid hunter and enjoyed time spent outdoors.

Tony was a Georgia Bulldog Fan and enjoyed watching the Bulldogs play football with family and friends. Tony loved his Church, The HiltonMethodist Church, and his Church Family.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents Clarance Earnest Knighton and Raynell WombleKnighton, and his brother, Earnest Bradley Knighton.

Tony is survived by brothers Ira Jasper Knighton (Jerri) and Larry Paul Knighton, and sister-in-law,Martha Jean Knighton.

He is also survived by Latona Knighton Kilpatrick, Waylon Knighton (Lisa),Stacey Knighton (Terri), Terry Knighton, Tammy Grantham (Jim), Calvin Knighton (Cristi) and BradKnighton (Tera).

Pallbearers are Waylon Knighton, Stacey Knighton, Terry Knighton, Calvin Knighton, BradKnighton, and Kevin Coleman.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at 2:00 PM EST in the Chapel of Manry-Jordan-Hodges Funeral Home, Blakely, GA.

The family will receive friends from 12-2 PM, EST,prior to services at the chapel, Rev. Laurie Lewis and Kevin Coleman will officiate services. Burial will follow in the Knighton Family Cemetery.

In Lieu of Flowers, the family request donations be made in honor of Tony, to the HiltonMethodist Church, 1751 Hwy 62 W Blakely, GA 39823.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Manry-Jordan-Hodges Funeral Home.

WICKSBURG. . .John Brent Smith, a resident of Wicksburg, died Sunday morning, June 15, 2025, at his home. He was 62.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 18, 2025, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Reverend George Bryan and Reverend Tommy Green officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. (C.D.T.) Wednesday in the Blakely Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the mortuary in Headland.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Bay Springs Baptist Church “Building Fund”, 1721 South Bay Springs Road, Dothan, AL 36305 or Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery Fund/ c/o Brenda Roberson, 1597 County Road 133, Abbeville, AL 36310.

Brent Smith was born and reared in Abbeville. He was a 1980 graduate of Abbeville High School and attended Wallace Community College and Troy University Dothan Campus. Mr. Smith retired, due to disability, from Flight School XXI in Daleville as an Electronics Technician on flight simulators. In earlier years, he was employed by Sony Corporation in Dothan. Brent was a member of Bay Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, J. B. Smith.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Amy Harris Smith; his mother, Inez Tharpe Smith, Abbeville; a sister, Brenda Ann Smith Fulford (Ted), Abbeville; a brother, Benny Smith (Renee), Abbeville; a sister-in-law, Nancy McCormick, Felton, Delaware; several nieces and nephews.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Spence Fulford, Greg Gordon, Kenneth Tew, Jackson Bawcum, John McGarry, and Trey Fortune.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Brent’s caregivers who provided loving care and kindness during his illness.

HEADLAND. . .Jimmy A. Hicks, a resident of Headland, died Saturday afternoon, June 14, 2025, at his home. He was 86.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 17, 2025, in the Headland Methodist Church with Pastor Clayton Lassiter, Reverend Phil Craddock and Pastor Phillip Pinyan officiating and eulogy to be given by Brent Hicks. Burial will follow in the Headland Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Tuesday in the Family Life Center of the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Headland Methodist Church “Legacy Fund”, 103 West King Street, Headland, AL 36345.

Mr. Hicks was born and reared in Geneva County, near Hartford, son of the late Luther Z. Hicks and Alma Capps Hicks. He was a 1956 graduate of Geneva County High School in Hartford and attended Massey Draughon Business College in Columbus and Atlanta. Mr. Hicks served his country in the Army National Guard in the Abbeville and Phenix City units. He lived in Columbus before moving to Headland in 1971. While living in Columbus, Mr. Hicks was a member of the Jaycees. He was an active member of the Headland Methodist Church where he participated in many church activities. Mr. Hicks formerly served as President of the Headland Athletic Association. He was retired from Hedstrom Union Company in Dothan. After retirement, Mr. Hicks was employed by King Church Furniture. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dot Brannon, and a brother Jerry Hicks.

Jimmy was known for his love of God, his family, all sports and especially Auburn football. His wonderful sense of humor made everyone smile.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Bonnie Helms Hicks, a son, Brent Hicks (Angie), Chelsea, AL; and a granddaughter, Marlee Hicks (fiancé, Jared Lamberth); a sister, Sue Cannon, Columbus, GA; a sister-in-law, Lynn Hicks, Hartford; sisters-in-law and brothers-law from the Helms family, Stan and Sherri McNeese, Alice Martin, Bob and Linda Weaver, Maxie and Wanda Helms and Chester and June Pruett; several nieces and nephews.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Steve Brannon, Mark Dillard, Laine Dillard, Bob Cannon, Tommy Cannon and Carson Joyner. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Curry Woods Men’s Bible Class.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Gentiva Hospice for the loving care and kindness shown to Mr. Hicks during his illness.
