James “Jim” Henry Norris Jr.

James “Jim” Henry Norris Jr.

James “Jim” Henry Norris Jr., known as “Nurse” or “Jimbo” by many, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, at the age of 77. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Jim was born on January 25, 1948, in Donalsonville, Georgia to Lillian Lucille and James Norris, Sr. His vibrant spirit, compassionate heart, and love for life left a lasting impact on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. Surrounded by the love of his family, he entered into rest in Dothan, Alabama.

Jim’s early years in Donalsonville were the foundation of a life filled with adventure and sportsmanship. He truly shone as an athlete, playing football at Dothan High School, which he carried forward to his time at Marion Institute, where he not only excelled on the football field but also embraced a lifelong commitment to staying active.

Jim’s devotion to his family was paramount, and he was blessed with 45 years of marriage to his beloved wife, Debbie Norris. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared passions. His legacy lives on through his sons, Hunter (Ashley) Norris and Sammy (Camille) Norris, and his adored grandchild, Jack Logan Norris. Jim also leaves behind his sister, Pam (Rusty) Hartman Scanlan and sister-in-law, Dawn Clark “Pat,” along with his mother-in-law, Catherine Carmichael, a special cousin, Beth (Steve) Peters, and several nieces, and nephews who will fondly remember his guidance and kindness

Jim lost his father when he was just three weeks old. Samuel Rudolph Barrett stepped into his life—not just as a stepfather, but as a guiding presence who lovingly raised Jim and helped shape him into the man he is today.

Professionally, Jim was a man of many talents. His work in underwater construction for the oil pipeline showcased his adventurous spirit and commitment to excellence. Jim also contributed his skills to Movie Gallery for 12 years, where his dependability and work ethic were greatly valued.

Jim’s impact on his community was significant. He enjoyed going to Compass Lake on the weekends. The weekends he spent there were filled with alligator hunting, water skiing, cookouts, and square dancing, creating memories that his family and friends will treasure forever. Additionally, his commitment to safety and service was evident in his pivotal role in starting the first Houston County Rescue unit and dive team.

An avid deer and dove hunter, Jim’s love for the outdoors was undeniable. His greatest passion was fishing, and there was no place he’d rather be than on the water, feeling the sun on his face and the gentle rocking of the waves. A ride on his Harley Davidson was more than a hobby; it was a reflection of his adventurous soul.

Jim was the epitome of loyalty, trustworthiness, and dependability. His friends knew they could count on him for support, and his thoughtful nature made him a confidant to many. Debbie, his wife, recognized him as not only her better half but also her best friend, a testament to the deep bond they shared.

Words that best describe Jim are adventurous, friendly, and thoughtful. These qualities were the cornerstones of his character and were evident in every aspect of his life. He approached each day with a smile and a readiness to help others, making him a beloved figure in his community.

The loss of James “Jim” Henry Norris Jr. will be deeply felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His memory will be cherished, and his spirit will continue to inspire those he has left behind. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we celebrate the life he lived so fully and the countless ways he enriched our lives. Her commitment to education did not go unnoticed, as she was revered by her colleagues and beloved by countless students who affectionately knew her as Mrs. Wingo until her retirement in 2002.

Her love of learning and literature was paralleled only by her devotion to her faith and her church community. A lifelong fan of NASCAR, he lived his dream of driving his own motorcycle on legendary tracks such as the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, and later achieved a bucket list item of driving a car on the Talladega Superspeedway in 2020. His outgoing nature, sharp wit, and big heart made him a joy to be around, as he was always ready to do the right thing, even in challenging times.

Loving, funny, and spirited are words that barely scratch the surface of describing Jene. He was a man who infused every moment with humor and zest for life.
