Johnny Crawford Jackson, 91, of Hartford, Alabama, carried with him nearly a century of memories—of a life shaped by strength, steady kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family, friends, and community.

Johnny always had a story to tell, often shared with a beaming smile and infectious laugh. His stories carried wisdom earned through experience and a life fully lived, often with a touch of humor—and just a bit of embellishment. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, who fondly remember riding in a wagon pulled by a lawnmower driven by their “Pawpaw.”

He had a way of making people feel at ease, turning ordinary moments into something meaningful with a well-timed joke or kind word. Whether vacationing in the Great Smoky Mountains, sharing a biscuit at Hardee’s in Hartford with his Fort Rucker friends, or offering simple advice, he created a sense of comfort that will be deeply missed.

Johnny attended Geneva County High School, where friendships formed in the halls of GeCo High lasted throughout his life. He and his best friend, the late Sunny Wesson, spent many days riding the back roads, swapping stories and tall tales.

Johnny and “Dot” were united in marriage on December 2, 1956, beginning a lifelong journey defined by deep devotion and unwavering love. Their bond was one of quiet strength and enduring partnership, built through years of shared joys, challenges, and countless cherished moments. Together, they created a life rich in family, laughter, and steadfast commitment—a love story that stood the test of time and leaves a legacy in the hearts of those who knew them.

Proud to serve his country, Johnny joined the United States Air Force and later spent four years in the Air National Guard. Following his military service, he worked for 33 years as an aircraft mechanic at Fort Rucker, Alabama. He was a dedicated member of the Elks Lodge in Dothan for 47 years and a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Hartford. A fixture in the Hartford community, he always sported a Member’s Only jacket and a First National Bank of Hartford cap.

He and his beloved wife spent many cherished years at their retreat on Lake Eufaula, welcoming family and friends for weekend getaways. Johnny loved being the “boat captain,” pulling his grandchildren on the inner tube and fishing off the dock.

Johnny also had a special admiration for Dolly Parton, inspired by her rags-to-riches story and the way she remained grounded despite her success. He appreciated her resilience, generosity, and ability to stay true to her roots—qualities he valued deeply in his own life.

He leaves behind a legacy not measured in accomplishments alone, but in the lives, he touched, the lessons he shared, and the love that continues through all who knew him. He will be remembered not just for the years he lived, but for the life he gave to those years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sydney Rufus and Allie Mae Jackson; his sister, Betty Jackson Orr; his granddaughter, Bethany Elise West; and his great-granddaughter, Kirkland Nell Chandler.

He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Dorothy Nell Mims Jackson; his daughters, Melita Jackson Smith (Danny) and Sonja Jackson West; his grandchildren, Brian Smith (Miranda), Zane West (Chloe), Lauren Smith Chandler (Ed), Gethe West, Alden Jade West Jahn (Paul), and Tiffany Werner; great-grandchildren, Hunter Jones, Paydon West, Levin Cook, Karson West, Gage West, Caroline Smith, Carter Smith, Everly West, Gatlin Werner, Collin Smith, Cager Jahn; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a special family friend and caregiver, Diane Odom.

Though he is no longer with us, his presence remains in the stories retold, the traditions carried forward, and the quiet moments where his memory brings both tears and comfort. He will be deeply missed, always loved, and never forgotten.

Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Serving as Pallbearers will be Danny Smith, Brian Smith, Ed Chandler, Zane West, Gethe West, Paul Jahn
