Alabama leads nation in executions for 2024

Alabama leads nation in executions for 2024

The state of Alabama executed six men in 2024, earning the state the title for most executions in the country this year.

This is the first time the state has executed the most people in the country.

Other top executioner states included Texas with five executions, and Missouri and Oklahoma with four executions each.

In 2024, the state of Alabama put Kenneth Smith, Jamie Mills, Keith Gavin, Alan Miller, Derrick Dearman, and Carey Grayson to death.

Smith, Miller, and Grayson were put to death using nitrogen gas—a method never used before until this year.

Experts from the United Nations issued a call to action to ban nitrogen hypoxia executions.

“We reiterate our call for an urgent ban on execution by nitrogen asphyxiation, which is clearly prohibited under international,” the experts said.

Attorney General Steve Marshall called the amount of executions a “team effort,” praising the amount of inmates put to death.

“This has been a team effort,” Marshall posted on X. “I would like to thank Commissioner John Hamm and @ALCorrections, as well as my dedicated group of capital litigators, for delivering long-awaited justice for each of these victims.”
