Hans Dieter Langhammer, known to many as John, passed away on June 11, 2026, at the age of 82, leaving behind a life marked by devotion, strength, and a deep love for family and the outdoors. Born on August 30, 1943, he lived with a steady spirit and a straightforward manner that those who knew him came to appreciate and remember fondly. He was a man who spoke honestly, listened carefully, and cared deeply for the people in his life.
John was a very caring person whose love was shown not only in words, but in the way he lived each day. He was tough when he needed to be, loving in the ways that mattered most, and always to the point. He never minced words, yet his directness was matched by a quiet patience and a willingness to listen slowly and fully before responding. His presence brought a sense of steadiness to those around him, and his family and friends knew they could count on him for honesty, strength, and support.
He was preceded in life by a deep appreciation for simple pleasures and the beauty of the world around him. John loved hunting and fishing, and he found great peace in the outdoors. He enjoyed the quiet moments that came with being outside, whether he was spending time in nature or sharing stories with others who understood that same love. He was also an avid card player, especially when it came to house poker, where his competitive spirit and sharp mind often came through. His enjoyment of these pastimes reflected the balance he carried throughout life, combining hard work, leisure, and fellowship in a way that was uniquely his own.
John made his home in Southeastern Alabama beginning in 1972, and he became especially connected to the Daleville area. Over the decades, he built a life there that was rooted in community, family, and familiar places. The region became part of his story, and he in turn became part of its story. Those who knew him in Southeastern Alabama remember a man who was dependable, grounded, and true to himself. He valued the life he built there and the relationships that grew around him.
John Langhammer dedicated more than 50 years to supporting Soldiers through Army service, civil service, and defense contracting. His commitment carried him across the United States and on multiple overseas deployments in service to the nation. He was a proud Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW), the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association, the Army Aviation Association of America (Quad-A), and the Friends of Army Aviation.
John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Donna Langhammer, who shared in a long and meaningful life with him. He is also survived by his children, Ryan Langhammer and his wife Barbara, Randy Miller and his wife Tracy, Danyell Langhammer, and Shawn Greenan and her husband Dumaca. He was preceded in death by his sons, Richard Langhammer and Christopher Langhammer. He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Kobe Greenan, Cali Greenan, Alexis Langhammer, Joseph Gordon, Alana Gordon, Alyssa Langhammer, Shane Langhammer, and Blaine Thomas. He is also survived by several great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews who will remember him with love and respect.
Family was central to John’s life, and he took great pride in those he loved. His legacy lives on in the lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the example he set through his words and actions. He will be remembered for his honesty, his caring heart, his love of the outdoors, and the strong presence he brought into the lives of others. Though he is no longer with us, the impact of his life will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
John’s life was one of character, loyalty, and enduring love. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
