13 years ago, Ethan’s story captured the attention of the entire nation during one of the darkest and most difficult moments in Dale County’s history. But through strength, faith, resilience, and the support of those who loved him, Ethan refused to let tragedy define his future.
I know Mr. Chuck Poland and Sheriff Wally Olson are looking down smiling at their “little Ethan” today!
Congratulations to Dale County’s “little Ethan” and fellow graduates of Abbeville High School. ⭐️

🚨 BIG NEWS, Houston County! 🚨
We’re taking a massive step toward becoming a HeartSafe County! We are thrilled to announce that the life-saving PulsePoint app is coming SOON to Houston County.
❤️PulsePoint is a revolutionary tool that alerts CPR-trained citizens to nearby cardiac emergencies in public places, bridging the gap between the 911 call and the arrival of EMS. It also helps you locate the nearest AED in real-time.
We want you to be part of the mission!
In honor of National CPR & AED Awareness Week (June 1–7), we are hosting training sessions throughout Houston County with our friends at Brightspeed and the Southeast Alabama EMS Council l to train citizens in CPR and how to use an AED, as well as learn how PulsePoint will play a big role in the HeartSafe Houston County initiative.

Sheriff John Tate is excited to announce that during this morning’s county commission meeting, the commissioners voted unanimously, 5-0, to transfer the county volunteer fire departments to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office effective June 1, 2026.
Prior to the meeting, Sheriff Tate met with the fire chiefs from each department to discuss what this transition means for their departments and personnel. All of the chiefs were supportive of the move and expressed excitement about the future of fire services in Holmes County.
Sheriff Tate also met with Jeff McVay, who recently retired from Walton County Fire Rescue after 30 years of service and experience in the fire service industry. Sheriff Tate has officially hired McVay as the Holmes County Fire Chief. Many of the local fire departments already know and respect Chief McVay, and we are excited to have his leadership and experience guiding Holmes County Fire Rescue moving forward.
In the coming weeks, Sheriff Tate and Chief McVay will also be meeting with the city councils of each municipality that currently operates a fire department to discuss his vision for Holmes County Fire Rescue and determine if they are willing to come onboard and partner in this new direction for fire services.
We are excited about this new addition to HCSO and eager to get started making positive changes for the citizens of Holmes County through Holmes County Fire Rescue.
Stay tuned as we continue making major announcements regarding Fire Rescue in the near future.
Sheriff Tate is already over EMS in Holmes County.
Congratulations to Benjamin McCardle . Ben recently passed his Advanced Emt national Registry. Ben is employed part time at Cottonwood Rescue and is a full time certified firefighter with Dothan Fire Dept. Ben was also recognized today at the Dothan commission meeting as Dfd Emt of the year. Congratulations on both accomplishments to better provide for your community.
